During the school holiday break, Barbara was fortunate to be able to share a mother-daughter expedition to Everest Base Camp.
Up in the mountains, each day was like opening a new page in a picture book. It was hard to believe that the scenery was real. The mountains are certainly monstrous.
We were fortunate to be blessed with excellent weather and were able to walk up the valleys (but some up and over ridges is unavoidable) to reach our goal of the Base Camp.
Our highest point was 5550m at Kala Patthur. The altitude was a challenge and we needed to ensure that we stuck to our acclimatisation strategies to climb safely. It was cold too but with the right gear, certainly manageable.
We must give a shout out to the Nepali people – very kind and generous. It’s certainly humbling when you compare how many languages our friendly sherpa guide was fluent in. Whilst the navigation isn’t too challenging, the local and mountain knowledge of a guide was invaluable.
If the Himalayas are on your bucket list – do it. It’s amazing and you will have memories of the top of the world for a life time.
